"Barry and I worked together in the NHL, that turned into a great friendship and eventually as co-workers with the legendary CSKA "Red Army" Moscow. Barry served the club as an Assistant GM, Pro Scout, Strength Coach and Consultant with the utmost integrity. It is difficult to explain in a few words the admiration I have for Barry’s passion with the game of hockey and health and fitness. You will not find another professional in the world with his vast experience or his level of knowledge. I have used his training methods on my own body, nothing else comes close"

"Barry is a unique Strength Coach that you don't find everyday. He approaches every player differently and focuses on our own requirements. This approach separates him from the rest of the pack and makes Barry one of the best in the NHL. It was great working with him during my career and I highly advise anyone looking to better their game to seek him out for his experience, knowledge and advice"

"As a Professor of Exercise Physiology at The Ohio State University (OSU), I have worked with, and trained in the classroom, hundreds of students interested in strength and conditioning as a career. Additionally I have worked with many of the strength and conditioning coaches at OSU. I have had the pleasure of knowing Barry since 2004, when he served as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets. Barry is unique in his approach and stands out as an example of what a modern day strength and conditioning coach should strive to be. There are very few strength coaches and personal trainers with the same sort of desire for new knowledge and the ability to then utilize it for their athletes. Barry is able to accomplish this application of knowledge for his athletes on a daily basis. He is highly motivated to understand the "why" when it comes to an exercise, training technique, or fitness principle, not just the “how” it is done. And he is not afraid to ask for help or seek input from those around him who can provide guidance. I observed his interactions with the CBJ players on many occasions. They all had a high regard and respect for him, and followed his advice carefully. He was methodical and careful in his approach to their fitness and nutrition. All of his actions were done with the singular goal of making the CBJ athletes the best hockey players they could each become. From 2004 through 2010 I worked closely with Barry to develop a series of pre-season fitness tests that every member of the hockey team had to perform. He was always very keen to understand the data and how it could be best applied to his training plans and workouts. I was always impressed with the knowledge Barry possessed, and his genuine desire to understand exercise physiology. Barry is truly interested in applying the principles of an academic field to his profession in order to help create better athletes"

He gave us great insight on nutrition and had us eating from proper food groups in order to maximize our physical output. "I met Barry when I was a young teenager and he worked with the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets. My dad was an assistant coach with the organization at the time, giving me the chance to hang around the rink on quiet days. In the afternoons when the team left for the day, Barry went out of his way to teach me proper weightlifting and training techniques, he prepared in and off-season programs for me and followed my progress along the way. At such a young age I knew nothing about safely lifting weights or off ice training. Barry helped me build that with workouts suited for my age and abilities. I began to see improvements in my on ice development with results from his help as I climbed to different levels of hockey from youth to juniors and finally as a professional. As a kid, you just want to get into the gym and to the lift the heaviest weight you can, not knowing how the even do each specific exercise. Barry's understanding of the importance in safe and scientific based training helped me get to where I am today.

"Barry has been a welcome addition to "Team Lebedev". His experience as a Strength & Conditioning Coach at the highest level of professional sport has helped me prepare physically in defence of my World Championship Titles. With limited time and on a budget, Barry is able to understand my needs and prepare workout programs for me that i'm easily able to incorporate into my busy life. He always makes me feel supported and is always there to answer any question I have, which makes it so easy to stay on track. Barry also helps me develop healthier eating habits for both me and my family by offering sound nutritional advice. Barry always treats me with a great level of respect. Barry is very motivating, tough when it’s needed and is a pleasure to train with"

ALEXIS GEORGE

"I started working with Barry at the Team Canada Training Centre during the winter of 2016. Recovering from shoulder surgery, he was able to work with my physical therapist to implement a rehabilitation / strength and conditioning program that got me to a better place than I was before my surgery. I was able to crack the squad that qualified Canada for the 2016 Olympics Games in Rio for the first time in 24 years, largely because I knew through working with Barry that my body would be able to withstand the repetitive stress that World Championship caliber volleyball entails. His knowledge is unquestioned, but what makes Barry unique in my eyes is his ability to connect with each athlete and understand what truly makes them tick to ensure the athlete gets the maximum results from each training session. I have taken much of the knowledge that I have gained from working with Barry and now use many of his teachings on my athletes at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario"

"I am pleased to offer my highest recommendations for Barry Brennan. I have known Barry for over 25 years. During that time, our relationship has been both professional and a great friendship. Barry’s own personal experience as a competitor in sport, along with his 30 years of professional development and coaching, make Barry a unique and highly qualified strength coach.  He is able to provide athletes with extensive training methodologies, motivating them to reach greater heights, at all levels of sport. I have been fortunate to work with Barry at the professional level of sport and witness his interaction with the athletes, as well as, other members of sports organizations. His understanding of the ever changing demands that exist in both a team and individual environment give Barry the respect and entitlement he has earned. I consult with Barry on a weekly basis regarding training, testing protocols, nutrition, treatment and regeneration strategies. His extensive knowledge and vast experience is a valuable resource in the athletic world"

"As a busy Mother of 2 young children and holding down a full time job I find it extremely difficult to fit in any gym time. Barry prepares me with two separate workouts, one I can do at home and another when I can make it to the gym. Barry is extremely motivating, and offers full support all the time. Barry has taken all the planning out and makes it very easy to follow. I now spend half the time working out, but look and feel twice as fit"

DIANNE RIVET

"I played in the OHL for the Guelph Storm before being drafted and signed by the LA Kings. At the recommendation of my Agent, I met with Barry shortly after having shoulder surgery as I was beginning to prepare for my first pro season. Barry not only helped rehabilitate my shoulder, he also corrected other major muscular imbalances he observed early in our training to ward off another potential injury. Barry brought incredible insight into our training that I had yet to see from other Strength Coaches. He taught me how to lift correctly, helped me gain the strength required to be a pro hockey player and he taught me the importance of understanding my own body and how apply proper recovery methods that are needed to maximize my training. I've made incredible strides since working with Barry and continue to do so to this day"

Scientific Training Principles

 behind what you do

Individual Differences

You are very unique. Your body will respond differently to exercise than someone else's. Your training program must be tailored to meet your individual differences and your responses to various strength and conditioning methods.

Overload

A greater than normal workload is required for physiological adaptations to occur within your body. For you to improve your overall functional strength, maximal strength, muscular endurance, power and speed, the application of individual loading protocols in a safe and controlled manner is necessary.

Adaptation

Refers to your body’s nervous system and musculoskeletal system’s ability to adapt to the loads you place upon it. This reinforces your need to maintain a technically correct and controlled progressive training protocol.

Progression

You must integrate a systematic approach to your loading and unloading phases to safely improve your strength and fitness levels. If your progression is too fast or too slow you can incur unnecessary injuries or cause a detraining effect respectively.

Specificity

For you to become better at a skill or a performance, your training regime must incorporate the correct exercises, training volume, intensities and rest that will enhance that skill or performance.

Reversibility

All physiological gains made as a result of your strength and conditioning program will be lost if you stop training for an extended period of time.
